DR. BUCHER: Laser dentistry has developed over the years. There are now hard-tissue lasers and soft-tissue lasers. We do have both. The hard-tissue laser allows us to treat a patient, in many cases, without the need for anesthesia, without a drill, and it allows us to basically treat the tooth with fillings and different restorations in a more conservative, much more pinpoint way. There are some people that come in that really don’t like the sound of the drill, and this is a way to get away from that whining sound of a drill, with the laser.
For soft-tissue lasers, which is a different laser, we have a way to treat gum issues for people, gum infections, or cosmetically re-contour their gums so that they better fit their face and fit their smile.
Laser dentistry really is for anyone. Really the only thing you can’t do with the laser these days is take out a silver filling. It’s wonderful for children, because we can go in and we can treat cavities on children when it’s very early, without the need of a drill, and many times without the need for Novocain and anesthesia. We also have a diagnostic laser. It’s a lot like a laser pointer, and we can use it to diagnose cavities in pits of teeth when it’s very, very early, before it even shows up on an x-ray. Lasers are great. They work well. They make people more comfortable, and they’re really for anyone.
