Description
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gum that degrades the bone and the supporting structures around the teeth. At the Laser Dentistry of North Jersey in Oakland, we employ the state-of-the-art laser technology to treat periodontal (gum) disease. DR. BUCHER: Periodontal disease is basically a bacterial infection of the gums that degrades the bone and the supporting structures around the teeth. Someone can have beautiful teeth, no cavities, and there’s just nothing to hold them into the jaw bone, and it really breaks down the gums. It’s silent, a lot like high blood pressure. Most people don’t know that they have it until it’s very advanced, and then they’ll feel pain and swelling and bleeding, and their teeth will be loose, and unfortunately many times at that point, there’s not a great road to bringing them back to long-term health. You can stop it where it is, but there’s not many ways to completely reverse it.
Most of the population has some form of periodontal issues with their teeth. We’re very fortunate that we can use the laser to treat much of it, and avoid surgery in many cases. We can use the lasers to treat their gum infection, get it under control, halt the disease process where it is, and then we maintain it on a very tight hygiene schedule, so that it doesn’t come back. It’s very important to address it. One, because you could lose your teeth, and more importantly than that, they’re finding that more and more systemic issues, cardiac issues, all tend to relate back to the same bacteria that are in the mouth that are concerned with periodontal issues.
