DR. BUCHER: Sedation dentistry is for the fearful patient, someone that has avoided treatment over the years, because they’ve either had a bad experience or they just have a psychological fear of coming to the dentist. What we do is not always the most comfortable thing. It tends to be a little invasive inside someone’s personal space. Sedation dentistry allows that kind of a patient to have more treatment done in a comfortable, relaxed setting, and usually in fewer visits.

We have a few different ways to sedate patients. For someone that’s mildly apprehensive, we have nitrous oxide in the office, which can just relax them. And then beyond that, we treat with oral conscious sedation, where they take medication the night before, and then when they come into the office we administer medication to them, by mouth, not IV, and we give them time for it to work, for them to be relaxed, and then we can treat them with the dentistry. They’re always awake. They always have all their reflexes, but they really don’t remember what was done. That’s the biggest thing for them. If they need to use the restroom, they can get up and use the restroom. They’re never asleep. There’s no IV that needs to be started, and the patients are just very, very comfortable. It’s a way for them to avoid pain. It’s a way for them to really avoid knowing they’re sitting in the chair and having all these treatments done, because they really don’t have a good memory of it the next day.
