Effective, Reliable Dental Replacements in New Jersey
Individuals who are missing teeth often struggle to find replacements that look and feel natural. While many patients are satisfied with removable dental bridges or traditional dentures, others may prefer a more permanent solution. Dental implants provide a reliable, long-term remedy for tooth loss, anchoring replacement teeth below the gum line so that the prosthetics look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.
To learn more about dental implants, contact Dr. Richard L. Bucher in Bergen County, New Jersey. His practice, Laser Dentistry of North Jersey, has been providing state-of-the-art restorative care to patients since 1991.
Placing Dental Implants
Several treatment sessions are typically necessary for the placement of dental implants. To begin the treatment, an incision will be made in your gum, exposing the bone of your jaw. Once the jawbone is exposed, Dr. Bucher will drill a hole in the location where the tooth is missing, also known as the edentulous jaw site. This hole will accommodate a titanium implant, which will act as your new tooth “root.”
Once the titanium implant has been placed into your jawbone, Dr. Bucher will close the incision site by replacing overlying gum tissue and suturing it shut. The site will heal over a period of two to six months, during which the titanium implant will fuse with the bone of the jaw through a process known as osseointegration. This fusion is what makes the dental implants so stable and reliable.
When you return several months later, Dr. Bucher will uncover the implant site in order to attach an abutment to the post, which will anchor a lifelike dental prosthetic, in the form of a crown, bridge, or full set of dentures. At this point, until permanent dental prosthetics are ready for placement, Dr. Bucher may fit you with a temporary crown.
Your tooth restoration process will be complete when you return several weeks later to be fitted with your custom-crafted dental prosthetic. Your new tooth, or teeth, will be customized to complement your surrounding natural teeth, for results that are discreet and attractive.
Maintaining Your Dental Implants
A thorough oral hygiene regimen is the key to making your dental implant restorations last as long as possible. By brushing and flossing regularly, you will ensure that the titanium implant post fuses solidly with the jawbone, and keep surrounding teeth strong and healthy. With good care, your dental implants can remain intact for up to 40 years.
